Elongation Test of an Aggregate

Elongation test is an important test of an aggregate. Because, aggregate is an important ingredient of concrete. Aggregate is how much elongated, it will acceptable or not as per their acceptance criteria, it will known by elongation test. I am representing here elongation test of an aggregate.

Elongation Index:-If aggregate least dimension is greater than 4/5th or 0.8 times its mean dimension, then it is called elongated.

Teat Procedure:-

(i) The aggregate of 200 pieces which is kept separately.

(ii) Now, weight of 200 pieces and suppose weight=2187 gm. Then it will mention in the format.

(iii) Elongation gauge will kept on a pan.Which aggregate will pass through this gauge, will fall fall in the bottom pan and whichever is not passes, will kept in separate pan/lid.

(iv) Passing range will be 20 to 16 mm. We will consider that longest/largest part of the aggregate will passes front. Same type we will check 200 nos.

(v) Retaining aggregate i.e. which was not passed, taken weight and note in format. Now weight=266 gm (retained particle)

(vi) Now, we will continuing this testing of each sieve retaining aggregate.

Format (Example):-

Passing through IS Sieve          (in mm)

Retained through IS Sieve                (in mm)

Wt. of fraction consisting of at least 200 pieces

Length of gauge size (0.8 times the mean sieve)

Wt. of aggregate in each fraction passing through the thickness gauge

As per IS code 383:2016, page no.-3, clause no.-5.3, the combined flakiness and elongation index so obtained shall not exceed 40 percent for uncrushed or crushed aggregate.
